My Rear View Mirror

Where does the time go? (I know, I know...That's the $1,000,000 question.)

It has been five and a half years since I last wrote here about our family of four (including our beloved dog, Solo, of course). Life happens, time flies, and here we are in 2020!

I love my rear view mirror (Is that weird?), and I've been thinking lately about all I've seen in it over the past nine years since Garrett was born. I probably spent those first several months with my eyes on him more than the road! (When he was a baby, car rides would consistently lull him to sleep, and they still have the occasional tendency to do so.) I remember exactly where we were when, at two or three years of age, he pointed out a school bus and said, "Skoo buss!", and exactly where we were when I caught his eyes and said, "Guess what, Buddy?".

"What?", he replied.

"I love you!", I said.

And my heart melted (for the thousandth time) when he repeated that exchange back to me with a big grin a few days later. "Guess what, Mommy?"

One of my favorite scenes in that mirror is Garrett singing along to the songs we hear on the radio.

These days, the scene is either him watching a movie on a portable DVD player while we drive to visit grandparents or play baseball or whatever the destination might be or him looking out his window, sometimes pondering big things and other times nothing at all, on our way to school every morning.

Before I know it, I won't see him in my rear view mirror because he'll be sitting beside me. And a few blinks after that, I'll be waiving to him as he drives away on his own. (Okay...SLOW DOWN, Erin.)

I don't express it nearly enough, but I love our life and all its scenes - rear view and otherwise.

Have a wonderful weekend!
